The battles we still fight
A small reflection from my 35th loop around the sun
Hi there,
Today feels like a special one.
Not just because it’s my birthday. Wohoo!
But because it’s also International Women’s Day.
I actually didn’t know much about its origins until recently. It began with women fighting for fair treatment. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, women across different countries were demanding fair pay, safer working conditions, and the right to vote.
Protests turned into movements.
Movements turned into change.
And over time March 8 became the day the world recognizes that fight.
And almost a century later, in 1991, it also happened to be the day I was born.
So today I want to say a heartfelt thank you to every mom, grandma, partner, friend, and courageous woman out there.
Without you, we would be nothing.
This morning reminded me of that in a very real way.
Even though I’m physically alone in an apartment in Mongolia, I’m not alone at all.
Enkhi surprised me with a video compilation from people I love around the world.
Messages.
Faces.
Voices.
Memories.
And it made me reflect on something.
Women fought for fair treatment from society.
Today most of us are not fighting those battles anymore.
But we are still fighting something.
Distraction.
Comfort.
Fear.
Our own habits.
And those battles shape our lives just as much.
That thought stayed with me this morning.
That’s when a few reflections surfaced about how we can approach those quieter battles.
Conquer yourself first.
The only fight truly worth fighting is the one within.
Discipline beats talent every time, and distractions are everywhere. If you don’t know where your target is, you’ll spend your life firing blanks.
Be bold.
We only get one life.
One of the saddest things I see when working with incredible people is how many of them never actually begin living.
Coaching changed that for me. It gave me permission to challenge people to take responsibility for their life and start living because the cost of not doing so is simply too high.
You are your habits.
What you do every day becomes who you are.
If you have a good day, repeat it. Spend time with the same people. Eat the same nourishing food. Work on meaningful projects. Protect your energy.
Thinking for yourself matters.
Now more than ever.
If life starts to feel dull or shallow, it might be because we’re outsourcing our thinking.
Be curious.
Be reflective.
Don’t let your brain rot.
Comfort is dangerous.
It feels warm and safe for a while.
But given enough time, comfort slowly takes everything from you.
Training the body, the mind, and the spirit keeps us ready for whatever life brings.
Time is rarely the real problem.
More often it’s a lack of clarity about what we truly want.
Less excuses.
More honesty with ourselves.
Be willing to be a beginner.
This one might be my personal cheat code.
Most people stop growing because they don’t want to feel stupid again.
Starting something new always feels slow, awkward, uncomfortable.
But if you push through that phase, competence comes surprisingly fast.
Let people talk.
Let them laugh.
Let them ask why you are the way you are.
Just smile and keep doing your thing.
One day, sooner than you think, those same people might ask how you did it.
And you’ll know the answer.
You simply decided to begin.
Your friend and coach,
Carlos
